Swachh Survekshan is the world’s latest cleanliness survey. The survey was commissioned by the Ministry of urban development. As many as 4221 cities were under observation for 28 days for the cleanliness survey.
Madhya Pradesh’s Indore emerged as the cleanest city for the 4th time in a row. The second and third spot was taken by Surat and Navi Mumbai respectively. Union housing and Urban Affair Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the result on 20th August 2020, in a virtual event called ‘Swachh Mahotsav’. The survey undertaken was totally digitized and paperless. Hardeep Singh congratulated the Jalandhar Cantt for being the cleanest cantonment in India.
Minister Hardeep Singh shared a memorable incident saying he visited Indore with a Japanese delegate a few years ago. He saw the Japanese delegate going to various places in Indore. So he asked him what he was doing. The delegate answered that he was trying to find filth in the city but couldn’t. The Japanese’s answer was the biggest testimony to the achievement of the city. The city has been the financial center of Madhya Pradesh and has been topping the list for straight 4 years in a row which is commendable.
Indore has become the biggest inspiration for the whole country, said the Minister of environment, forest, and climate change Prakash Javadekar.

- Vadodara, Gujarat
The Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2020 was the fifth edition undertaken by the government. Ever since the BJP came into power, much emphasis has been laid upon sanitation of the cities. Other than big cities, the small cities and towns were also surveyed and were part of Swachh Bharat Survekshan. In the small city category, the Maharashtra state grabbed 20 spots out of 25. The top three small cities were Karad, Sasvad, and Lonavala. All these 3 cities belong to Maharashtra.
To keep separate towns and cities situated at the bank of river Ganga, the Ministry announced a separate list for top-performing cities. Among which, Varanasi topped the list, followed by Kanpur(Uttar Pradesh) and Munger(Bihar) respectively.
Hence this was about the top 10 cleanest cities in India that topped the Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2020. The government has been taking initiative to make India clean and green by launching various projects. So now it’s our turn to support the initiative and keep our country clean and green.
