Earlier, it was just a mere possibility. And now it has happened. The government of India announced the ban on the most popular gaming app PUBG and other 117 additional apps on 3rd September, Wednesday. According to App Annie, an agency that monitors the use of mobile apps reported that PUBG has around 50 million users in India of which 13 million are daily users.
PUBG banned in India
Because of its Chinese connection and also India and China are in the middle of the border dispute where China is trying to encroach Indian territory in Ladakh. And now India is hitting back by banning Chinese apps in the country. The government earlier already ban some of the Chinese apps including TikTok and now added 118 to the list.
According to the IT Ministry, “The apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to the sovereignty, and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.” In a statement, the government said that using the sovereign powers, we have decided to block the usage of certain apps used in both mobile and non-mobile internet-enabled devices. They further added that this move will safeguard the interest of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure the safety, security, and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.
In the next few hours or a day so, Google and Apple will receive government notification to remove the Chinese apps for Indian Users. People who have PUBG on their phones will continue to have it but it may not work because telecom companies like JIO and Airtel will block PUBG connection to serves after they receive the notification from the government.
Can PUBG game ever be allowed in India?
Not any soon because of the on-going dispute between China and India. And India is unlikely to lift up the ban unless the dispute is resolved.
However, the good news is you can still play PUBG in India but just not on mobile phones. Yes, because originally the game was made for computers by a South Korean company. Therefore this game remains available in India. The PUBG mobile and PUBG mobile lite are made by Tencent company under the license from the Korean company. So only these two apps have been banned in India.
