On 20th August 2020, Swachh Survekshan’s results were announced. As many as 4221 cities participated in the Swachh Survekshan 2020, out of which Indore bagged the first position while Surat occupied the 2nd.
The other 3 cities of Gujarat also made their way into the top 10 cleanest city list. Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Vadodara occupied 5th, 6th, and 10th positions respectively. Vijay Rupani, the chief minister of Gujarat congratulated the people, elected representatives, and mayors of the four cities for achieving the milestone.
A virtual ceremony was also organized for Swachh Survekshan 2020 by the union minister Hardip Singh Puri in Gandhinagar. The event was graced by the presence of Surat Municipal Commissioner B.N. Pani, Mayor Dr. Jagdish Patel, and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ashish Naik.
Vijay Rupani heartily congratulated the Surat Municipal Corporation team for their achievement.
SMC commissioner B.M Pani said that it was a well-deserved achievement for the city like Surat. The achievement is the result of hard work and continuous evaluation by the SMC team and the employees ranging from safari kamdar to top officials helped in maintaining it.
Last year, Surat bagged 12th spot in the Swachh Survekshan ranking. Under ODF++ and garbage-free five star rating, Surat city scored 1300 out of 1500 marks. The city also scored 1500 in the spot visit category. Under citizen voices about the work of SMC and work done under the Swachhta App, the city scored 1369 marks out of 1500. In total, Surat city secured 5519 marks out of 6000.
The city was highly appreciated for garbage management and disposal as the city became the garbage container free city. Yes, you read that right. The city has removed containers and upgraded with the underground waste bins at 75 locations. For ensuring efficient waste segregation, the city has divided the bins into dry and wet waste. Surat also started 551 vehicles to collect the dry and wet waste from households and is sent to the Kajod site for further process.
The city’s daily collection of 75 tonnes of plastic waste is recycled to produce crude oils, pellets using technology, pyrolysis, and plastic management plants. Under Swachh Bharat Mission, the city’s Solid waste management concentrates on the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of 1800 metric tonnes of waste per day. Also, the city has replaced the manual work of sweeping and brushing roads by 22 mechanized sweeper machines.
Hence due to dedication and hard work put by SMC, Surat bagged the 2nd spot in the Swachh Survekshan ranking 2020. The city is well-deserved to be bagging this spot. Also, the other 3 cities of Gujarat made their way in the top 10 Swachh Survekshan ranking which is a milestone in itself for the Gujarat state.
