This is because the movie was written with the consultation of Shakuntala Devi’s daughter Anupama. The movie is conveyed from the perception of Shakuntala Devi’s daughter. So that’s the reason behind the movie focusing on the mother-daughter relationship.
In this movie, Shakuntala Devi is not glorified. Her flaws are equally shown on-screen. In some scenes it’s quite visible that the writers have conflicted views. Therefore it creates a sense of confusion for the audience. Whether Shakuntala Devi was a jerk mother or was she not. There is also a problem that the struggle of Shakuntala Devi is not represented well. How did she manage to reach London? In the movie you see her performing in London. That’s it. The movie would have been perfect if the struggles of Shakuntala Devi were depicted in the movie well. The movie also doesn’t describe how she prepared for the Guinness Book of World Record. Or is it like she didn’t prepare at all. These are a few questions that arise when you watch the movie. Also her great works were quite ignored just to focus on being a not so perfect mother. This makes the movie quite disappointing.
