Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Shri Krishna is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year.
It is considered to be one of the important festivals of the Hindu religion. According to the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha(dark fortnight) in the month of Shravan. And this year, Janmashtami is on 11th August.
The celebration of Janmashtami includes Raslila, a drama in which scenes of Krishna’s life are enacted. Many communities also indulge in Dahi Handi, where a human pyramid is created to break the Handi which is being suspended up by a rope. Many temples are decorated to celebrate the birth of Krishna. Also, many ceremonies are performed on this day. For instance, the idol of Krishna is kept in a swaddle and is swung by the devotees. In the morning, the idol is given a bath and Chappan Bhog (56 dishes are offered)is offered to the lord. Many aartis, bhajans are sung on this day to appreciate and celebrate the life of Shri Krishna.
In Dwarka, the city where Shri Krishna spent most of his life, is decorated to welcome the pilgrims who arrive to celebrate the festival. Many aartis and bhajans are sung by the devotees to appreciate and remember him. Many devotees even get immersed in the Bhakti(devotion) of Lord Krishna.
Lord Krishna is also observed as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He is one of the most loved deities in Hinduism who taught us many life lessons. Krishna was known for his mischievous nature in his childhood and many girls(Gopis) were fond of him while he was in his youth. He faced many mortal dangers in his life and is renowned for his wisdom, strength, and agility. In Mahabharat, he not only supported Pandavas but also ignited divine power in each of them. Krishna came into the world to teach us the meaning of love and dharma.
So in this way Janamashtami is celebrated across the country. Shri Krishna and his extravagant life will always be remembered and celebrated with great zest by his devotees. Jay Shri Krishna.
