Since the restrictions on shipping non-essential goods were uplifted in the month of May, the E-commerce industry started reviving itself gradually. E-commerce Giants Amazon and Flipkart have started recovering their sales which took a backseat due to nationwide lockdown. As a result of relaxations, the companies started working at their full capacities by delivering non-essential goods. Now the companies are seeing 80% recovery in their sales compared to pre-COVID sales in the first three weeks.
Now let’s see which of the categories are recovering
Due to nationwide lockdown, many employees started working from home, therefore, there was a significant increase in sales of electronic items like USB cables, wifi routers, smartphones, extension cords, etc . The electronic sector has not only recovered its sales but it has also improved by 45% all thanks to working from home culture. However, the value of the carts is decreased by 5-10% because people are more into buying low-value items necessary to operate from home. Apart from electronic accessories and smartphones, other home appliances, and merchandise products saw growth in their sales. Home and Furniture accessories also saw growth in their sales which was unexpected.
Coming to the online fashion industry, earlier it was assumed that it will be hard for this sector to recover but this sector also saw a recovery in their sales of about 70%. The demand for comfortable wear increased due to people sitting at home. For instance items like casual T-shirts, athleisure has emerged popular among online shoppers. In this category too, the value of the cart has decreased by 25% less than the usual because people have headed to buy affordable and low-value clothes than the expensive ones. The demand for formal, wedding, and party wear has gone down significantly.
Also, in the skin and wellness beauty category, many brands saw the spike in their sales.
Other than these categories, the sales of essential products and grocery items remained strong and are expected to double.
While the mobility services, like cab-booking, saw the highest fall. Other services like food-delivery, event-ticketing also took a hit with falling sales.
Furthermore, it is important to notice that the volumes of sales may have increased but the value of sold products is quite low. Also, people are resorting to online shopping to maintain social distancing and that’s quite good news for all e-commerce companies. In this critical time, e-commerce businesses have helped many people incorporate their life easily.
