Shravan month

Shravan month is considered to be one of the sacred months of the year as per the Hindu calendar. The Shravan name is believed to be derived from the Nakshatra called Shravan that rules the sky during this month. Every fifth month of the Hindu calendar is recognized as Shravan month. The shravan month begins at the end of July month and ends in the 3rd week of August. And in 2020, the Shravan month will begin from 23rd of July and will end on the 22nd of August.

In Shravan month, each Monday or Shravan Somvar is celebrated in Shiva temples by offering bael leaves, flowers, holy water, and milk to bathe the lingam or Shivling. Devotees also fast to get the blessings from lord shiva.

Now, coming to the importance of the Shravan month. This month holds great significance in the Hindu culture because a major mythological event took place in Shravan month called Samundra Manthan. It is considered to be one of the most important events as per Puranas.

Samundra Manthan was an event where the Asurs and Devas came together to churn the milky ocean in search of Amrit, a boon of immortality. So during the churning process, 13 gems emerged from the ocean and were distributed equally among Asurs and Devtas. At the end, the 14th ruby Halala remained untouched as it was the deadliest poison. Therefore the Devtas approached Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva decided to drink the Halala to save the world. The poison had a dreadful impact that it turned Shiva’s throat into blue. Therefore Lord Shiva is also named as Neelkanth. All the devtas started offering Ganga water to decrease the effect of the poison. Also, goddess Parvati placed her hand on Shiva’s throat to prevent the poison from spreading into his whole body. Thus the poison remained in Shiva’s throat forever and did not spread in his entire body.  So this major event happened back in Shravan month. And this was the story behind Samundra Manthan and how Lord shiva saved the universe by drinking poison.

Therefore this month is celebrated by worshipping Lord shiva. This month is also addressed as an auspicious month to start any new work. So if you are thinking of starting a new journey or venture, this month is the best time to start it
