Every year India celebrates Engineer’s Day on the 15th of September. This day marks the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who was also popularly known as Sir MV. India celebrates this day on 15th September because Sir MV was the builder of India. He introduced India with dams and boosted irrigation facilities. He is the pioneer of Engineering and his genius approach is reflected in harnessing water resources and consolidation of dams across the country. Sir MV was not only a prolific Civil engineer but was also an economist and a statesman.
Sir MV was also known as the ‘father of modern Mysore’ because of his notable contributions in industrial, economic, and social projects. For his incredible contributions towards Indian society, he was also awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna in the year 1955.
Events and celebrations
On this very day, the Engineering communities, institutions, companies organize various events to mark the celebration of Engineer’s Day. The day begins with paying tribute to Sir MV on-premises and campuses. This is followed by keynote speeches by prominent leaders in their domains by highlighting the contributions of Sir MV and his accomplishments in the field of Engineering. Many cultural and technical events are organized in colleges to mark the celebrations. Students on this day also exhibit their technical projects addressing some prominent problems faced by the country. Every year the council of Engineering chooses a theme for Engineer’s day. This year it hasn’t been disclosed yet. Many countries celebrate Engineers’ day as per their history and significance.
Engineer’s day is marked to celebrate the innovations of Engineers who have made our lives easy. By inventing numerous products with the help of which many complex problems are solved easily, Engineers should be celebrated for their dedication and innovative minds. India produces around 1.5 million engineering graduates every year. That’s approximate twice the population of Iceland. Also, nearly 16% of Startups in Silicon Valley have had an Indian co-founder.
